About Château Duhart-Milon

Château Duhart-Milon is a neighbouring property of Château Lafite Rothschild and was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite in 1962. Oral tradition presents “Sieur Duhart” as a privateer of Louis XV who settled in Pauillac in his retirement and whose house on the port of Pauillac inspired the label of Duhart-Milon wines. The 1855 classification elevated Château Duhart-Milon to the rank of the only 4th Grand Cru Classé in the commune of Pauillac.

The Vineyard

Located in the north of the Pauillac appellation, the vineyard of Château Duhart-Milon is set against an area of over 100 hectares of marshes, meadows, and woods. It has quite an unusual location in the Médoc. It covers 76 hectares, almost in one block on the western side of Château Lafite Rothschild, on the Milon hillside which extends the plateau of Carruades de Lafite. Its sandy gravel soils, deposited in the Quaternary period, contain variable levels of pebbles, sand, and clay. The largest terroirs of Duhart-Milon have mostly gravel soil with 10%+ of clay content. The grape varieties are divided between Cabernet Sauvignon (67%) and Merlot (33%).

The Mark of Time

A Château in spirit, Duhart-Milon celebrates the unique know-how of Men who know how to deal with nature, whatever its state, and make the most of it. A know-how that is passed on from generation to generation and leaves the mark of time.

The soil of Duhart-Milon has been in the making for thousands of years under the influence of the Gironde, the estuary that shapes these lands. Time has done its work on its layers of crumpled limestone and water-splashed notched cliffs.

It has carved out the furrows where alluvium and clay particles meet, so that a few metres away, the expanses of fine gravel and aeolian sands form the Milon hillside… Then the vineyard was planted and thrived, under the careful watch of many sets of eyes.

The Duhart-Milon grape is not docile, but some have learned to understand it, over the years and with the advice of their elders. Generations of winegrowers have succeeded one another on this honest and generous land from which great wines are sourced.

Our Commitment

A cellar in the heart of Pauillac, A vineyard in dialogue with the woods and marches.

With a renovated, more functional and less energyconsuming winery, and extensive agro-environmental development of the vineyard, Duhart-Milon is preparing for the future!

The launch of an oenotourism activity in the heart of Pauillac serves multiple purposes: to introduce our wines to a wide audience, to share our professions and passion for the terroir in a simple and accessible language, and to bring dynamism to the region.

The Wines

Château Duhart-Milon wine leaves its mark like a trace in living matter. It reveals the veins of the passing of time like grooves in the soil of Pauillac. It is the truth of the land that speaks through those who understand it.

Moulin de Duhart, the second wine, is selected from the same vines, generally younger than the average vineyard, and is aged in barrels for a shorter period. Its name originates from a mill that used to be found on the Carruades plateau, adjacent to the Duhart-Milon vineyard.
